Volkswagen employees adds colour to development centre

Dr Ambrose Cato George Skills Development Centre got a new coat of paint when more than 200 Volkswagen Group South Africa employees came together to paint the facilities.

Started in 2011, the Dr Ambrose Cato George Skills Development Centre provides skills training in the fields of a motor mechanic, needlework, spray painting, sewing, woodwork and beadwork. Currently, there are more than 92 learners participating in the variety of programmes. With the facilities in need of refurbishing, more than 200 Volkswagen Group South Africa employees volunteered to assist in the spirit of Mandela Day.

As part of the Show of Hands initiative hosted by VWSA’s Community Trust, the volunteers painted classroom doors and door frames, as well as exterior and interior walls and chalkboards. The outside also saw the addition of a water-wise garden and creative murals. Making a difference in the Gelvandale community the volunteers also packed 20 000 meals which were donated by Arcadia Moravian Church, Salem Moravian Church, Jeanny’s Soup Kitchen, Outstretched Hand, Shode Outreach, Fishers of Men, St Vincent de Paul, Gelvan Frail Care Centre, Imfundo Educare and Baptist Church in Helenvale.

“The support and enthusiasm of our employees are truly humbling, the Community Trust endeavours to promote youth development and community wellbeing, and it is inspiring to see how many members of the VWSA family share our commitment to making a difference in the lives around us.” Thomas Schaefer, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen Group South Africa.
