Green Door Shelter hopes for a better year in 2021

The founder of Green Door Women’s Shelter in Diepsloot, Brown Lekekela said this year was the most challenging and difficult year for the organisation which provides a safe shelter and support for victims of rape, domestic violence or sexual abuse in the area.

Lekekela said he is optimistic that the year 2021 will be a much better year for the organisation that provides essential services to the community of Diepsloot.

“This year was the most difficult year to us at Green Door Shelter following the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic that led to the introduction of hard lockdown early this year. At some stage, we thought of closing the shelter because of difficulties and lack of resources required to keep our doors open. Through the assistance and donations from community members, we were able to revert that decision and kept our doors open.”

He thanked members of the community for their constant support that kept the doors of the shelter open until today.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Fourways and Diepsloot communities for their support and donations. We urge these communities and local business to continue lending a helping hand to support the victims of gender-based violence. The incidents of gender-based violence in the community continues to rise, more and more women and children find themselves homeless and without shelter. We wish all our sponsors and donors a merry Christmas and successful year in 2021.”
