Community, with the aid of Con Brio Cares, comes together for families of premature babies

Con Brio Cares celebrated World Prematurity Day with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital as Fourways residents donated goods to support the families of premature infants.

On November 17, South Africa observed World Prematurity Day. Con Brio Cares, a Fourways based non-profit organisation, celebrated the day with Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, supporting families of premature infants.

Their recent initiatives have underscored the critical needs of these families, and the importance of collective compassion during difficult times.

In preparation for World Prematurity Day, Fourways residents partnered with Con Brio Cares by mobilising to assemble care packs specifically designed for premature infants and their mothers.

These care packs included essential items such as knitted clothing, beanies, blankets, wet wipes, menstrual hygiene products, and comforting toys, all intended to provide both practical assistance and emotional support to families facing the challenges of premature birth.

“Our organisation is deeply committed to ensuring that no family has to navigate this journey alone. We are incredibly grateful for the support we received from the community, which made it possible to create and distribute 150 care packs to local hospitals, including the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital and Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital. This initiative was a powerful reminder of how we can come together to make a difference,” said Elindi van den Heever, founder of Con Brio Cares.

The distribution of these care packs comes at a crucial time when many families find themselves unprepared for the sudden arrival of a preterm infant, often lacking the necessary resources and emotional backing during those early days.

The involvement of both the CEO and medical staff of Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, along with endorsements from local officials, has emphasised the collaborative spirit of the community in supporting these vulnerable families.

Although World Prematurity Day has passed, the need for ongoing support remains. Con Brio Cares encourages residents to continue engaging with their efforts to provide essential resources and encouragement to families of premature infants.

“Every little bit helps, and we invite community members to donate items or volunteer their time to support families in need. We truly believe that together, we can provide vital assistance to those facing uncertain times,” Van den Heever added.
Through the compassion and solidarity of the community, Con Brio Cares is determined to ensure that families impacted by prematurity receive the love, resources, and support they deserve, both now and in the future.
