What to do when your pet goes missing in Johannesburg

It's a terrifying moment when your beloved pet goes missing. Before you panic, follow these steps recommended by your local SPCAs.

Your local SPCA knows how important your beloved furry friend is, but what happens when they are lost? Here is a useful guideline:

I’ve lost my pet, what now?

The most important thing you can do is to visit your local SPCAs frequently to ensure that you are checking the kennels for your dog. In the interim, these are the steps you can follow:

Step 1: Call the SPCA so that they can complete a Lost Report. They will ask you to provide as much information as possible and then email a photograph of your pet.

Step 2: Tell your neighbours. Animals often return to familiar surroundings, so let your community be your eyes and ears.

Step 3: Make flyers and distribute them in your neighbourhood and/or send a recent photo to your neighbourhood WhatsApp and other social media groups.

Step 4: Ask your Neighbourhood Watch to be on the lookout for your pet. Provide patrollers with a recent photograph of your missing pet.

Step 5: Report your missing pet to all veterinary practices in and around your area.

Step 6: Report your missing pet to all animal welfare organisations. Each organisation operates independently, so reporting to multiple entities ensures a comprehensive search.

When claiming your pet, please be aware that a statutory municipal fee will be charged. This fee covers the pound fee, transportation costs, microchip, and any veterinary expenses incurred during their stay with the SPCA.
