Little Steps hosted its annual Sports Day at King’s College, bringing families together for a morning of movement and community spirit on August 29.

The event allowed young learners to develop gross motor skills and coordination while enjoying the outdoors.

“We do our annual Little Steps Sports Day. We work with other schools to use their fields, so this year we’re at King’s College, and we’re very grateful for the use of their fields,” said Little Steps principal Melissa Savage.

She said the day reflected one of the school’s core beliefs – that children learn through play.

“At Little Steps we believe firmly in learning through play. That includes gross motor and whole-body movement,” she said.

Savage said Sports Day was not only about competition, but also about giving children the opportunity to move, enjoy the outdoors and spend time with their families.

“It’s a way to recognise that we can move and we can be out in the beautiful fresh air, out in the beautiful sunshine, and in community. Families will get together and have a picnic on the grass and support other people,” she said.

Activities focused on physical development

The event featured a variety of activities designed to encourage movement, balance, coordination and, most importantly, fun.

Savage said the activities were deliberately designed to be enjoyable and inclusive.

“We had egg and spoon races, penguin waddle races, sack races, water-in-the-bucket races and ball races – everything to try and get the hand-and-eye coordination really going, but also for the kids to have fun,” she said.

“We want it to be really silly and fun. And just running races as well. So if they couldn’t balance, then they could run. Or they could bounce. Lots and lots and lots of fun.”

Strong support from school community

Parents were also encouraged to get involved, with many joining the activities and cheering on the young participants.

Savage said their involvement was an important part of what makes the day special.

“It’s about the community really and getting them to move as well,” she said.

For Savage, the strong turnout from families was another reminder of the close-knit culture at Little Steps.

Marie [she preferred we use her first name], who came to watch her grandson, said the day was amazing and allowed families to meet and bond.
