Learners, staff open their hearts give to the Tops and Tags for Wheelchairs

In less than two weeks, the school collected almost 50 000 plastic bottle caps.

Learners, parents, and the staff of the School of Affirmations (SOA) and Heavenly Flowers Pre-primary in Lambton opened their hearts to the Tops and Tags for Wheelchairs initiative recently.

In less than two weeks, the school collected almost 50 000 plastic bottle caps. Natasha Viljoen, the marketing officer of the SOA, said the idea to participate in the initiative came from Sonja Kruger, a member of their Lambton community.

“The owner of both schools, Heidi Searle, was approached by Sonja, her mother, who asked for help with collecting plastic bottle tops for the project.”

Heidi saw a member from their community receiving a wheelchair and noticed how it changed their life. She decided to get both Heavenly Flowers Pre-primary and School of Affirmations involved.

“The schools submitted the caps and decided to continue with the support towards the Tops and Tags for Wheelchairs initiative. “It humbles me to know that something as worthless and meaningless as a bottle top to us could make an immense difference in someone’s life. “I know, with the help of my wonderful team and the help of the community, we will be able to change more people’s lives, one top at a time.”

Heidi encouraged the community to participate. “Anyone is welcome to drop plastic bottle tops or bread tags at any of our school offices. “We are situated at 28 First Avenue, 20 Second Street and 28 Fourth Avenue in Lambton Germiston. “We intend to submit the next load at the end of April,” said Heidi.
