Germiston business threatened by water outage

Hygiene is key in our line of business and not having enough water to maintain that is a serious challenge.

A food distribution business in Germiston has been left without water for almost a month and this has affected how they maintain hygiene at the premises.

Germiston Food’s safety officer Annah Kranjcec said hygiene is a top priority in their line of business and the water crisis is making it difficult for them to maintain proper standards.

“We have one tap with low water pressure in a factory of 70 employees.

Food safety officer Annah Kranjcec said the business needs to meet the highest standards of cleanliness at all times, and having no water is compromising these standards.

“This is a serious challenge because keeping the factory clean has become a difficult job as we need to use the bucket system,” said Kranjcec.

“The factory needs constant cleaning and collecting the water from an outside tap is time-consuming.”

She said they reported the problem on July 30 and the City of Ekurhuleni dispatched meter readers to check the meter but they were told it was working fine.

“We were told the problem cannot be solved by them, another team will have to check the pipes.

“When the second team arrived they also failed to resolve the problem because they could not even find some of the pipes they were looking for,” said Kranjcec.

She said they were concerned because when the second team of workers inspected the fire hydrant, there was no water.

“We are in an area that has flats and we are next to a shopping centre. If a fire should occur, chances are this business will burn down because the fire hydrant has no water. That is a serious risk,” said Kranjcec.

According to her, it seems like an entire block on Gardener Street has no water.

Food safety officer Annah Kranjcec said the business is concerned that there is no water.

“We have made follow-ups and have not received any response. We would appreciate any form of communication to tell us what is the problem and when it will be sorted.

“It’s been long enough. We pay for our services and we are not receiving any,” said Kranjcec.

GCN sent a request for comment on August 24 at 12:45 to CoE.

At the time of going to print, no comment was received.
