Learners of Hoërskool Vryburger High School aim high

“The school places a high value on rugby, but all students are expected to participate in extracurricular activities of their choosing. We want to see learners in all available sports but also the choir, dance, debate teams, drama and more.”

The Representative Council of Learners (RCL) team at Hoërskool Vryburger High School discussed their goals for the school.

The RCL committee believes they will end the year on a good note despite the financial difficulties.

GCN spoke to the committee, and they shared their vision.

RCL president Boitumelo Kekana said most learners’ behaviour and modes of interaction remain impacted by the limitations put in place during lockdown, even though Covid-19 has been out of the picture for years.

“Everyone has expectations going into high school, and everybody’s high-school experience is unique. Upon my arrival at high school, Covid-19 was in place.

Those were different years, and now that I can change things, I hope every learner can fully enjoy their time in high school.

“The school places a high value on rugby, and they have been making us proud, but all the students are expected to participate in extracurricular activities of their choosing.

“We want to see learners in all the available sports but also the choir, dance, debate teams, drama and excellence in academics,” said Kekana.

“Strangely, this year has seen a change in the leadership of the RCL. Before, we had physically intimidating leaders, making it a little difficult for younger students to approach them.

“This time, our team is more approachable, firm and available to all the learners in Grades Eight to 12. Our goal is to be recognised as difference makers in the school community and as part of our legacy,” said Kekana.

Vice president Nolitha Ngcongo said the school’s feeding scheme significantly impacts the learners because those who would likely have had nothing to eat for lunch can get food directly from the school’s kitchen.

“To get everything in order and to encourage everyone to pitch up, two RCL members assist the women in the kitchen.

“When the kitchen first operated, nobody wanted to go eat, but when I went to get some porridge, there was a queue behind me. It dawned on me then that we, as the RCL, influence and drive the masses.

“To help with the feeding programme, the Grade 12 classes were challenged to gather and donate canned food to the feeding scheme,” said Ngcongo.
