Free cricket lessons offered

Optimum Cricket Academy owned by Boipelo Madumo is offering free cricket lessons to young cricket players from the Kathorus area.

The lessons are conducted at Spruitview Multipurose Park on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3.30pm until 5.30pm.

At Actonville Spurs Cricket Club in Benoni, lessons are conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm until 6.30pm.

Madumo said his passion for honing the skills of young cricketers and the lack of black cricket players motivated him to come up with the idea.

“There is still a stigma attached to the sport. People still believe that it is for white people. As a result, very few black people partake in cricket,” Madumo told Kathorus MAIL.

He said there is still a great need for black people in cricket.

The programme will run from 3pm till 6pm during the school holidays until the school reopens.

“Other than the school holiday programme that runs during the week, I also do training every Saturday at Spruitview Multipurpose Park from 9am until 12pm.

“I teach children the basics of cricket including hand and eye co-ordination as well as fitness,” Madumo said.

He said parents are more than welcome to bring their children.

Those who would like to bring their children to training can contact him on 082 254 2450.
