Marathon training for KAC

Katlehong Athletics Club (KAC) hosted a 100km running festival over the Easter Weekend to provide much-needed training to Comrades Marathon runners in the Kathorus area.

It started on March 30 with a 32km run from Huntersfield Stadium to Silver Ball Tank in Johannesburg, followed by another 32km run from Mtsiri Corner to Mall of the South on March 31. Then 21km from Mtsiri Corner to Tsietsi in Zonkizizwe on April 1 and 15km from Mtsiri Corner to Kwanele Zone Six on April 2.

Hloni Motloung, KAC chairperson, said the purpose was to maintain the level of fitness of runners who will be attending the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town and Comrades Marathon in Durban.

“None of the Comrades Marathon runners had an option to choose dates on which they will run in this four-day marathon. While the Two Ocean Marathon runners had an option,” said Motloung.

He said they charged only R20 per day compared to R80 charged by a suburban club.

“We wanted to cater for all runners and provide enough back-up on the route with water, potatoes with salt, sweets, snacks and cold drinks to ensure runners enjoy the endurance race.”

He said they now have their eyes set on the 60km run on April 27.

“By running this run we will be providing Comrades Marathon runners with enough millage required to finish the 90km at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on June 10.

“April is a running month for Comrades runners, so all preparations are made in April to ensure enough tapering in May and a comfortable race in June are achieved.”

He said as KAC they humbly request motorist to be careful and avoid hitting runners during these training times.
