Tamlin-Jade Johnson, from Solheim, was thrilled when she was named asone of the 18 national finalists for the Miss Earth South Africa 2015 title.
The finalists, from all over South Africa, were named on August 2.
The GCN caught up with Tamlin after the announcement, to find out what is next for the determined 22-year-old.
Speaking from her office at the Bertha Gxowa Hospital, she discussed the busy weeks that lie ahead.
“We have two major projects to focus on before the finals week, in September,” she said.
The first project on which Tamlin will work is called Generation Earth, which is a youth-focused environmental project that strives to cultivate green leaders for the next generation.
Some of the focuses are to educate the youth on positive behavioural changes they can make, encouraging the youth to make responsible environmental choices, empowering them in the “Green Economy”, greening community spaces and planting sustainable food gardens.
The second project, Miss Earth’s Big O2 Challenge, will see the national finalists challenging companies to plant trees in local communities or at schools.
Each company will then nominate other companies and/or organisations to do the same.
The project aims to raise awareness, promote active community and business involvement and combat deforestation.
If you, as an individual or as a company, would like to get involved in this project you can email Tamlin at tamajade@hotmail.com.
In addition to these projects, Tamlin will be continuing her work with the Avril Elizabeth Home and Rebontsheng Primary School.
“I am hoping that these projects will be my legacy projects,” she said with pride.
Personally, she continues her work as a physiotherapist at the Bertha Gxowa Hospital, where she enjoys making a difference in people’s lives.
“At the moment we are hosting weight loss classes,” she said.
“We are working with the dietitians here at the hospital, and have enjoyed finding a fun way for our patients and ourselves to stay healthy during the winter.”
The Miss Earth South Africa 2015 winner will be announced on September 10.
