Reconstruction begins on storm-damaged homes

The metro is appealing to the community to donate towards the reconstruction of storm damaged homes.

Emergency relief and reconstruction efforts continue in the metro, where more than 3 000 homes were damaged during recent storms.

Approximately 1 049 houses whose roofs were damaged by strong winds have now been covered with temporary sheeting.

Arrangements to permanently fix the roofs are underway, and contractors will began with the work on Thursday.

Over 2 000 cases of broken windows have been reported and repairs to these will follow once all the roofs have been repaired.

Meanwhile, the Ekurhuleni Health Department, together with the Gauteng Department of Social Development, is visiting homes that were affected, to provide counselling services and tend to those in need of food, blankets and any other form of social assistance.

Since last week, a total of 296 households have been visited, 43 of which have been referred to the Food Bank SA for assistance with food parcels and 25 to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

The metro appeals to individuals and organisations to make donations of non-perishable foods and blankets at a temporary stall which has been set up at the Primrose Fire Station, 1 Pretoria Road (situated between the swimming pool and bus depot), in Primrose.

Construction companies are requested to lend a hand by donating their time and materials and by volunteering to rebuild the roof of a house during the reconstruction period.

They can contact Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services on 011 999-9565 for more information.

Those wishing to make monetary donations can do so using the following Nedbank bank account:

Account name: EMM Disaster Relief Fund

Account number: 1120949068
