Children’s safe haven

Local company Johnson Matthey SA continues its plans to improve its local community.

“Our plan is to make a difference; no matter how small, we will always try to make a difference.”

This is the motto by which Germiston South-based company Johnson Matthey SA has been living.

Their community upliftment projects began in March, when they donated 120 pairs of school shoes to the children of Ekurhuleni Primary School, in Dukathole.

The company then took to the streets in June, hosting a community crime walk and Youth Month sports day.

Now the company has donated a playground to the children of Dukathole.

“A number of employees driving to and from work would watch in horror as young children played in the streets of Germiston South.

“We, as a company, decided we had to change this and make a safe place where the children could play,” said Ndima Rawana, site services director for Johnson Matthey SA.

The children of Dukathole have received a safe new playground from local company Johnson Matthey SA. The playground was officially handed over to the company last Monday.

“We thank the community, as well as the local taxi association for their involvement in the project,” he added.

“The land where the playground has been built used to be a taxi rank.”

The project is a Green Plastics Design, which means that all the playground equipment, including the surrounding fence, is made from recycled plastic.

“We chose plastic as it is long lasting, waterproof, impervious to insects and never rots or splinters,” explained Rawana.

The Germiston SAPS once again partnered with the company and taught the children about their rights and responsibilities, encouraging them to take care of the playground and its equipment.

Before leaving the children to play, the company treated them to party packs.
