Breaking news: Woman (65) dies in service delivery protest

A 65-year-old woman has died in a service delivery protest in Windmill Park this morning (June 2).

Eye witnesses told Advertiser’s reporter on the scene, Ntombi Sibeko, that the elderly woman died after apparently inhaling tear gas, the Boksburg Advertiser reports

The tear gas canister had been reportedly fired into the crowd by the police while trying to disperse the protesting residents.

At the time they were apparently trying to barricade the R554.

The woman was allegedly among irate residents who took to the streets this morning, accusing the municipality of failing to deliver services.

They have barricaded the entrance to the township, Gelderblom Street near the R554, with burning tyres and stones since morning, demanding better service delivery in the township.

Members of the SAPS are closely monitoring the protesters in the area.

Detailed information on the protest will follow soon.
