Police confiscate pistols, rifle and ammunition

According to Capt Mega Ndobe, the spokesperson for the Kathorus SAPS cluster, the man was arrested after the police received a tip-off from the local community while patrolling the area.

“We once again wish to compliment the community for their active vigilance against crime in the area,” said a jubilant Ndobe after the man’s arrest.

Ndobe told Kathorus MAIL that the police received a tip-off about a stolen vehicle believed to be in the possession of the suspect. Ndobe added that upon their arrival on the scene, the police searched the man’s premises and found an EcoSport vehicle that had been reported as hijacked in Jeppestown, east of Johannesburg.

Further searches of the premises yielded 140 rounds for an AK47 assault rifle, a 303 rifle and a 9mm pistol, including 10 rounds of ammunition. The serial numbers on the firearms had been erased.

“All the weapons found at the man’s house will be taken for forensic tests to determine if any of the weapons had been used in committing a crime. The suspect made a formal appearance at the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court for a formal remand.”

Meanwhile, in nearby Dindela Section, also in Vosloorus, a 22-year-old man was arrested after he was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 57 rounds of live ammunition.

Ndobe said the firearm would be taken for ballistics tests to determine if it had been used to commit crime.

The man made a formal appearance in court, and the case was remanded to a later date for trial.

The Vosloorus SAPS’s Acting Station Commander, Solomon Phago, also applauded members of the local community for assisting the police in the fight against crime in their area. Phago, urged the community to continue giving assistance to the police in an effort to eradicate criminal elements in Vosloorus.
