Library Week: Defaulters can return outstanding books without being fined
Libraries offer vital resources to address community needs, and are places where the community gathers to interface on community issues.
The City of Ekurhuleni celebrates the national library week from Saturday, March 16 to Saturday, March 23.
According to Themba Gadebe, the Library Week is an annual event that’s celebrated every third week of March.
“The celebration aims to support the national drive to promote literacy through the provision of library and information services,” said Gadebe.
As part of the National Library Week celebration the City of Ekurhuleni libraries will expect all users with any long outstanding books from paying fines.
Libraries Boxes will be placed in the libraries where users can place the long outstanding books without being fined.
“This year’s theme for Library Week is “Collaborate @ your library”. The theme seeks to emphasize and promote the idea of working together at the city’s libraries, and to encourage libraries and communities to forge mutually beneficial relationships.”
Ekurhuleni’s MMC for Community Services Dora Mlambo said: “Libraries are so much more than just books, they reflect and serve communities according to their needs,”
The Library Week celebrations will also recognizes the vital role played by the libraries in integrating users into new world characterised by sharing of information. This applies to all libraries that include those that are based in schools, public libraries and academic libraries.
