Communications officer at Thokoza SAPS Capt Buyisile Mvelase said Det Const Mandla Ntshangase investigated the case when he received information about the suspect, who was arrested in Mahlabathini in KwaZulu-Natal for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“Ballistic reports concluded that the catridges found in Mshayazafe Hostel match that of a gun found in possession of a suspect who was arrested in KZN,” said Mvelase.

She said the suspect, Nhlakanipho Zulu (29), was charged with murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspect was sentenced as follow:

• Count one: Murder – life imprisonment

Mvelase said count two and three will run concurrently with the sentence on count one.
