New chapter for baby home

El-Shammah Home for Abandoned Babies and Place of Safety is excited about paediatric rooms’ renovations.

In July, work began to renovate and revamp the paediatric rooms at El-Shammah Home for Abandoned Babies and Place of Safety.

Life Roseacres Hospital, as part of their Sizanani project, donated a number of items to the home to help with the renovations.

On Friday, Allistair and Merencia Scholtz (El-Shammah Home managers) were delighted to officially open the rooms.

“This was just an idea,” said Merencia at the opening.

“But it became more of a reality after speaking to Dr Janet Lumb (a paediatrician) who was working at a children’s foundation in Randfontein.

“Janet was looking for satellite rooms to work from and we had rooms available here at the home that we wanted to put to good use.

“Janet began working from the paediatric rooms, with children from other children’s homes, through appointments she handles herself.

“But the rooms needed to be renovated.”

Merencia thanked Roseacres, Silvasons Hardware and Unity Glass Works for their help in making their dreams a reality.

Janet was thrilled with the renovations.

“For the past 15 years I have worked with children’s homes and worked with El-Shammah Home even before Allistair and Merencia took over,” Janet said.

“I am really enjoying working here and in this environment.

“The rooms are beautiful and the perfect size and are so clean, hygienic and well-lit, we have everything we need.

“Allistair and Merencia are open to children from other homes seeing me here, which is wonderful.”
