Load-shedding keeps criminals under cover
Please allow me space in your newspaper to express my concerns as a citizen of South Africa about the ongoing situation with electricity in the country.
The government and Eskom need to do something drastic, quickly, to come up with a lasting solution to load-shedding before it is too late and many lives are lost. The ongoing load-shedding, especially at night, is nothing but an open invitation to criminals to commit acts of crime and violence.
And with the police seem reluctant to take a decisive stance on crime, one can only contemplate the hole we are digging ourselves into as a nation.
The government must understand that everything that becomes a “norm” in society is immediately turned into an opportunity by criminals. Criminals are now aware that load-shedding occurs every night and there is nothing to stop them from targeting certain areas during Eskom’s scheduled blackouts.

What is even more frightening is that most of these night load-shedding schedules last longer than those taking place during the day.
South Africa has enough crime as it is, and with communities further burdened with watching their backs at night, I fear we’re losing the ability to govern.
