“We urge our residents to surrender all illegal and/or unwanted firearms, firearm parts and/or ammunition without fear of being prosecuted,” said Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police.
“Individuals and/or institutions in possession of firearms without a legitimate licence, permits or authorisation are also welcome to hand over their firearms in this period.
“We also welcome those who need to surrender firearm parts (slide, bolt or breech-block) without a licensed firearm capable of bearing that part.
“Those in possession of illegally imported firearms and those who are declared unfit to possess a firearm and have failed to surrender their firearms and ammunition should also use this opportunity to hand in the firearms in their possession.”

Maome reminded the community that carrying a firearm without a valid licence is an arrestable offence.
“We appeal to the community to take advantage of the amnesty period,” said Maome.
