Local parkrun suspends activities
The director of the Rondebult Parkrun, Thami Xala, has added his voice to the call by the international body to suspend parkrun activities until further notice.

“In view of the coronavirus outbreak and following the announcement by the State President declaring the epidemic a dangerous disease, we’ve decided to join hands and play our part to protect our members,” explained Xala, who added that his move is aimed at ensuring the safety of his members.
A statement issued by the international body and directed at parkruns around the globe, states the reasons for suspending activities is based on health concerns following the outbreak of the coronavirus. “We’re writing to let you know that in line with public health advice we have taken the decision to close all parkrun events across South Africa, Namibia, and Eswatini with immediate effect,” reads the statement.
The statement indicated that the initial closure is expected to be in place until the end of March. The international body is also looking at the prospect of the closure continuing through April at least.

“Going forward, we will update park runners regularly and communicate important information as soon as is appropriate. We know that this message may be a difficult one for you to receive, and many people will be wondering what to do without their regular weekly catch-up,” said the statement.
Meanwhile, the international body has assured members that the organisation is working hard to develop strategies to support the health and happiness of park runners around the world during this difficult time.
“Remaining active is incredibly important, and we are working on ways to encourage and support that. However, please do not arrange group gatherings at your parkrun venues while parkrun events are suspended,” read the statement.
