Celebrating 50 years of the Boeing 747 ZS-San Lebombo’s history in SA

The Boeing 747-244B Lebombo was donated to the South African Airways Museum Society after they were asked by the museum in March of 2002 to donate the plane.

The South African Airways Museum Society celebrated the 50th anniversary of the arrival in South Africa of SAA’s First Boeing 747, ZS- San Lebombo, on November 6.

The South African Airways were happy to donate the plane to the museum during 2002 as it was soon to be retired from service.

The acquisition of the Boeing is seen as possibly the single most proactive event in preserving civil aviation history in South Africa.

SAA’s First Boeing 747 celebrated its 50th anniversary of arriving in South Africa.

The concept was to display the aircraft and set up facilities whereby the aircraft can be utilized to its fullest extent for aviation awareness programs as well as for fund-raising for the society.

Lebombo has never flown again but has been on display for aviation enthusiasts.
