City clears Germiston sewer blockages

The CoE stepped up efforts to fix sewer blockages in Germiston, urging residents to stop dumping waste into drains and to follow building rules.

The CoE has stepped up efforts to tackle sewer blockages threatening public health and damaging critical infrastructure in Germiston.

The MMC for Water and Sanitation, Thembi Msane, led officials in clearing the blockages, primarily caused by foreign materials such as oil residue, sand and rubble.

“Sewer blockages disrupt essential services, pose significant health risks and result in costly repairs to the city’s sewer infrastructure,” said Msane.

“The urgency of the problem is underscored by the Germiston water and sanitation depot alone receiving nearly 40 sewer blockage reports per week,” said Msane.

During the unblocking blitz, Msane engaged residents in Phumula, Leondale and Buhle Park on what causes the clogging.

“Residents are advised to avoid disposing of oil, rubble, and other foreign objects into the sewer system, building on servitude lines and without approved building plans,” said Msane.

Residents are urged to promptly report blockages and comply with building regulations.
