Ekurhuleni clamps down on illegal buildings as mayor urges businesses to comply
The City of Ekurhuleni has intensified its by-law enforcement in Etwatwa, urging business owners to follow proper development procedures and ensure they hold valid trading permits and business licences.
The Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Alderman Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, has urged business owners across the metro to comply with development regulations and ensure they hold the necessary trading permits and business licences before operating.
Xhakaza, joined by the MMC for Developmental Planning and Real Estate, Nomadlozi Nkosi, is leading a by-law enforcement operation targeting illegal buildings.
The operation forms part of the City’s broader efforts to improve safety, compliance, and orderly development in local business areas.

During the engagement, officials also met with business owners to emphasise the importance of adhering to municipal processes, including proper building plan submissions and compliance with health and safety standards.
The City has encouraged business owners who need support to visit their nearest Customer Care Centre (CCC) for assistance with applications.
Residents and business operators are reminded of the following:
• Trading permits and business licences: Applications can be submitted at any CCC. Forms are also available for download on the City’s website.
• Building plan approval: Building plans must be submitted and approved by the City before any construction begins. Assistance is available through the Town Planning section at local CCCs.
The City says the crackdown on illegal structures is aimed at preventing unsafe developments, protecting consumers, and ensuring businesses operate within the law.
