Ekurhuleni households urged to monitor water use and fix leaks

City urges indigent households to manage water use as consumption rises.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) urges residents to use water sparingly as citywide consumption rises.

This notice also reminds approved indigent households to stay within their monthly free basic water allocation to avoid additional charges.

Through its Free Basic Water Programme, the city provides qualifying indigent households with up to 10 kilolitres (10,000 litres) of free water per month to meet their basic household needs.

The city applies the subsidy directly to approved consumer accounts, subject to its indigent policy and registration requirements.

To qualify, households must formally apply for assistance, meet the eligibility criteria, and be approved for registration on the city’s indigent register.

Approved households that consume 10 kilolitres or less per month are not charged for water used within the allocated limit.

However, consumption above the free allocation is billed at the applicable tariff, and affected households may face water restrictions in line with the city’s policy.

“Residents are encouraged to check their municipal accounts regularly, monitor their water consumption and repair leaking taps and toilets promptly. Even a small, continuous leak can waste significant amounts of water and cause households to exceed their monthly free allocation,” said City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“The city is also intensifying water conservation measures through leak detection and repairs, maintenance of leaking water meters and connections, and improved pressure management across the water distribution network.”

“Residents can contribute to these efforts by using buckets instead of running hosepipes, turning off taps when water is not needed and complying with Level 1 water restrictions,” said Dlamini.

Residents can report water-related faults, including leaking water meters and burst pipes, through the My CoE App, by calling 0860 543 000, or by emailing call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za. Residents are advised to keep their reference numbers for follow-up.

Households seeking indigent assistance can visit their nearest Customer Care Centre for information on the application process and qualifying requirements.
