Ward 61 commemorates Heritage Month

Ward 61 Clr Sanele Ngubane donated blankets and provided them with ANC merchandise, following as per their request last year.

Senior citizens and people living with disabilities from Ward 61 were spoiled with blankets as the community observed Heritage Month at Zonkizizwe Community Hall on September 29.

According to Ward 61 ANC Clr Sanele Cromwell Ngubane, they aimed to celebrate the elderly in the ward with this event.

He said it was vital to honour elders because they were involved in the apartheid history, fought against it and have experienced many challenges for us to have a better future.

Senior citizens and people living with disabilities received blankets.

“I feel happy to spend time with them and see them dance to various cultural songs. I also organised with the Ekurhuleni Health Department to conduct health check-ups,” said Ngubane.

The seniors spent the day interacting and enjoying a line-up of entertainment. They received food for breakfast and lunch and were gifted blankets.

Gogo Flora Khaye said they are happy to be recognised as human beings, because as elderly, they are often neglected.

Nikiwe Mthombeni noted although they do not get service delivery, at least their councillor recognised them, not only during the voting period.

“We appreciate this because our national and provincial governments always forget about us.”
