Parents of children with special needs given a treat by local NPO

An outing for parents to unwind and explore the Modderfontein Nature Reserve.

Edenvale’s Keakgona Kefentse ASD Centre treated moms to a hiking experience at the Modderfontein Nature Reserve on November 11.

The autism resource centre spoiled parents with special needs children with hiking and lunch concluding with a counselling session.

Founder Lindiwe Ndlovu said this was a much-needed break for the parents.

“The hiking was for the parents, caregivers, friends and relatives that are supportive of parents whose children are ASD diagnosed or have other needs.

Moms are taken out for some fun.

“We wanted to unwind and let them know that they are not alone – it was an open invitation to the community,” she explained.

On the day, they had two sessions. The morning session started with a hike followed by an awareness and counselling session at the NPO’s offices.

Ndlovu is a clinician and a mother of three autistic children.

“Being a parent of a child with ASD takes a toll on you emotionally and physically. I am happy that the event went well and was inclusive.

“We had great support, which is what we need in this journey, knowing that there’s someone who cares,” she said.

She thanked the community for the support as they look to make it an annual event.

“We would appreciate any form of donations to keep on supporting the parents so they too can feel special, cared for and included by their community.”

About 20 people attended the event.

She added that the NPO’s goal is to include stimulation centres and holiday clubs to accommodate children with special needs.
