Elsburg Support Group launches initiative to upskill youth

She said often they are lacking access to resources that could help them reach their full potential.

The Elsburg Support Group (ESG), which remains steadfast in its mission to uplift residents, recently launched targeted initiatives to empower the youth, support the elderly, and address local unemployment.

Founded in 2012 by psychiatric nurse Florence Matona, ESG has grown into a symbol of hope and unity for the community.

During a recent initiative, ESG partnered with NEMISA to host a one-day digital computing training session, aimed at teaching participants how to start, run, and grow online enterprises.

The programme provided certificates of competence upon completion and targeted young residents facing limited educational and job opportunities.

“Our youth are our future,” said Matona.

“Empowering them means building a stronger, more resilient community.”

ESG, mostly funded by sponsors, plans to expand similar programmes to offer young people business startup knowledge, with the hope that they might create jobs for others.

“Unemployment has been a longstanding issue in Elsburg, affecting many families,” Matona said.

“If we arm youth with entrepreneurial skills, they can help boost local employment.”

The group’s efforts extend beyond the youth to include vital support for the elderly, many of whom face daily struggles with mobility, limited income, and health challenges.

ESG volunteers regularly assist with errands, transportation, and companionship to combat isolation, ensuring older residents know they are valued members of the community.

“We want our elderly to know they are not forgotten,” Matona said.

As ESG continues its work, it stands as a testament to the impact that local, community-driven initiatives can have in creating lasting change.
