Beware of housing scams – Gauteng Human Settlement warns
The department has reiterated that its services are free of charge and urged residents not to fall victim to these fraudulent schemes.

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements (GDoHS) has issued a warning to the public regarding scam notices currently circulating on social media.
These fake advertisements, some bearing the image of former MEC Lebogang Maile, target individuals who applied for housing between 1999 and 2022.
GDoHS has emphasised that these scams are being perpetrated by individuals falsely claiming to be senior government officials, including directors, MECs, and heads of department, in an attempt to appear legitimate.

Scammers are exploiting unsuspecting members of the public, asking for money in exchange for jumping the housing waiting list, purchasing RDP houses, or acquiring land through the department’s programmes.
The department has reiterated that its services are free of charge and urged residents not to fall victim to these fraudulent schemes.
“We strongly urge the public to report any suspicious activities or offers to the authorities immediately. Protect yourself by staying vigilant,” said a spokesperson.
To safeguard against these scams, residents are advised not to share personal information with unknown individuals, to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the department, and to rely solely on official communication channels for updates.

For legitimate services such as subsidy applications or inquiries, residents are encouraged to visit the department’s official regional offices or contact their local municipality.
Physical addresses for these offices are available on the official website: www.gauteng.gov.za under the Human Settlement tab.
The department remains committed to serving the community and ensuring that housing processes remain transparent and accessible to all.
