Police seize firearms in Germiston

The suspect was believed to be hiring out guns in Germiston.

SAPS Ekurhuleni Crime Intelligence members address the proliferation of unlicensed firearms in Ekurhuleni.

They took five unlicensed firearms off the streets in Germiston, Putfontein and Rabie Ridge.

The members had received information about a person having unlicensed firearms who was believed to be hiring them out in Germiston.

Officers arrested the person in an intelligence-driven operation with Germiston Crime Prevention members.

The suspect was seen inside his residence in Dinwiddie.

“Upon arrival at the suspect’s address, they granted permission to search the premises. Members found three unlicensed firearms, two revolvers, one with serial number filed off, a 9mm Lamma Parabellum, two magazines filled with five live rounds each, 178 9mm live rounds and two special rounds for a .38 revolver,” said Ekurhuleni district communications officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela.

Suspect arrested for possession of illegal firearms.

“A 47-year-old was arrested for possessing three unlicensed firearms and taken to the Germiston SAPS for detention after he failed to give satisfactory answers regarding the licenses to possess the firearms,” said Sekgobela.

“In Putfontein, a 30-year-old was arrested on Nkalankala Street, Mayfield, during an intelligence-driven operation with the EMPD Tracing Unit.

“The suspect is believed to be one of the prison gang members and drug addicts committing house robberies around the Springs policing precincts.

“In another incident, a 40-year-old was arrested in Phomolong Section, Rabie Ridge.

“The suspect was found with a Norinco 9mm pistol and a magazine with four live rounds of ammunition,” said Sekgobela.

Ekurhuleni district commissioner, Major General Anna Sithole, commended the members for their swift response and for creating crime-free environments in the district.
