“Investigations were ongoing to locate the meter/valve, which was in a chamber hidden by street traders’ supplies.

“The meter was eventually located by the water team on April 15. Daily interactions with consumers and multiple site visits were made to locate the connection,” said city spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

“Unfortunately, there were no alternative sources as water was available on the property, but the pressure was low due to the leaking meter connection.

“But should there be a total shut down, water tankers are made available.

‘This is a technical issue, and breakages and faults can occur at any time. However, we do our best to maintain the infrastructure on the ground.

“The problem was fixed. Multiple inspections were conducted by water inspectors along with other departments in the City of Ekurhuleni, including support from the stand owner, Transnet, and their managing agents.

“The meter/valve was located in an underground chamber, and street vendors were laying their materials on top of the chamber lid, making it difficult to locate.

Repairs were completed on the same day the valves were located, so there were no delays in restoration. The water meter will be replaced with an aboveground meter for easy location,” said Dlamini.
