Gauteng police arrest over 900 in crime sweep

Police seized weapons, vehicles, diamonds, and shut down illegal liquor outlets in targeted efforts to combat violent crime and illegal mining.

Over 900 people were arrested across Gauteng this weekend (May 17 and 18) during Operation Shanela, which was led by Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni.

The operation targeted crime hotspots such as Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng, and the West Rand.

Most suspects were wanted for violent crimes, including murder, robbery and hijacking. Police also shut down illegal liquor outlets.

Separately, 1 857 suspects were arrested in April as part of Vala Umgodi operations, targeting illegal mining. Offences included murder, possession of explosives and counterfeit goods.

Police seized diamonds, firearms, ammunition, vehicles, and mining equipment.

Several suspects were caught in raids in Primrose and Rietvlei, with some found carrying illegal weapons.
