Makause shack fire displaces 18 families, two hospitalised
A devastating fire ravaged the Makause informal settlement leaving around 18 families displaced after engulfing their homes.
A recent multiple shack fire broke out in the Makause informal settlement, displacing around 18 families.
The City of Ekurhuleni’s fire department received a call at 00:37 and responded promptly, with the Primrose Fire Station leading the effort and backed by teams from Bedfordview, Edenvale, Albertina Sisulu, and Rynfield fire stations.
Upon arrival, the fire crews found multiple shacks engulfed in flames and effectively brought the fire under control using defensive and offensive modes, preventing it from spreading further.

According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, a similar fire occurred in June 2021, where 13 shacks were burned down.

The fire was brought under control within an hour through a robust response involving multiple major pumps.
“The cause of the recent fire is still unknown. Two patients have been reported at this scene, one sustained injuries on his leg as he was assisting with extinguishing the fire, and the other one has suffered smoke inhalation.

Both patients were transported by a Gauteng EMS ambulance to Bertha Gxowa Hospital for further medical care.
