Teaching sustainability: Alston Primary marks National Recycling Day
Learners at Alston Primary participated in fun, educational activities about recycling after receiving bins and party packs from Etex Building South Africa.
In commemoration of National Recycling Day, Alston Primary School in Leondale was abuzz with excitement on September 19, as Etex Building South Africa made a special donation to the school.
The company not only handed over large waste bins to promote sustainable waste management but also sponsored party packs for 1 400 learners, making the day both educational and memorable for the children.
The event was attended by the Country Director of Etex Building SA, together with the Safety Manager, departmental teams, and partners.

The highlight of the programme was the official handover of the bins, which will support the school’s ongoing efforts to create a cleaner, greener environment.
The initiative also aimed to educate the learners about the importance of looking after the environment, emphasising the three R’s of Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse.

To reinforce the importance of recycling, Panda Green Solution facilitated a fun and interactive teaching session. Learners were introduced to the concept of “separation at source,” sorting recyclables, organic waste, and non-recyclables, while also discovering what materials can be recycled locally.
The session ensured that the children not only enjoyed the festivities but also walked away with practical knowledge they could apply at home and in their community.
Speaking at the event, Country Director Ruben Roach emphasised the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
“Recycling is not just about waste management, it’s about building a future where our children understand the value of protecting the planet. Today we are planting those seeds right here at Alston Primary,” said Roach.

National Recycling Day in South Africa, held annually in mid-September, serves as a reminder to reduce, reuse, and recycle, with the ultimate goal of making these practices part of daily life.
