EMPD intensifies Transport Month road checks across Ekurhuleni
Several arrests and vehicle impoundments were made as officers cracked down on unroadworthy cars and invalid licences.
As part of ongoing Transport Month operations, the EMPD Freeway Unit intensified law enforcement efforts with a series of roadside checkpoints and inspections.
These operations, done in collaboration with the Intervention Unit, Community Liaison officers and the Overload Unit, aimed to ensure vehicle roadworthiness and verify the validity of drivers’ licences and permits.
The effort yielded significant results. Nine illegal foreign nationals were arrested, one person was detained for fraud, five vehicles were impounded, and 28 summonses were issued to motorists violating road regulations.

In a separate but equally critical incident highlighting the importance of road safety, the CoE emergency services responded to a fatal car crash on the R59 near the Swartkoppies on-ramp in Alberton. The crash involved a single vehicle carrying four male occupants.
Preliminary reports suggest the vehicle rolled multiple times, ejecting two passengers, who were declared dead at the scene by Netcare paramedics.

The two surviving occupants sustained injuries and were transported to the Thelle Mogoerane and Bertha Xowa hospitals, respectively.
The EMPD secured the scene and will continue investigating the cause of the crash.
