Government congratulates matric Class of 2025 on record 88% pass rate
The government has praised the matric class of 2025 for achieving the highest National Senior Certificate pass rate on record, with all provinces exceeding 80%.
The government has congratulated the matric Class of 2025 after achieving a record National Senior Certificate (NSC) pass rate of 88%, the highest in South Africa’s history.
According to the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), the achievement marks a significant milestone for the education sector, with all nine provinces recording pass rates above 80% for the first time. KZN emerged as the top-performing province with a pass rate of 90.6%.
More than 900 000 learners wrote the 2025 NSC examinations, making it the largest matric cohort ever to sit for the exams. In another historic first, all 75 school districts achieved pass rates of 80% and above.
A press statement released by the government stated that the results reflect steady improvement in learner performance and highlight the resilience, commitment and hard work shown by learners throughout their schooling journey.

The success was attributed to a collective effort involving learners, educators, school leadership, parents, caregivers and education stakeholders across the system.
Encouragement was also drawn from strong performance in key subjects and the growing number of learners qualifying for bachelor, diploma and higher certificate passes.
These outcomes provide a solid foundation for increased participation in post-school education and training, while supporting the development of critical skills needed by the economy.
While celebrating the achievement, the government acknowledged learners who did not attain the results they had hoped for. It emphasised that examination outcomes do not define a learner’s worth or future prospects.

The Department of Basic Education, working with its partners, has committed to ensuring psychosocial support services remain accessible during this period. Learners experiencing emotional distress, anxiety or disappointment are encouraged to seek help through free and confidential services, including Childline South Africa and the South African Depression and Anxiety Group.
Learners who did not pass or who wish to improve their results have also been encouraged to explore the Second Chance Matric Programme, supplementary examinations and alternative education and training pathways.
The Second Chance Programme is offered free of charge and provides opportunities for learners to complete their schooling or gain market-relevant skills.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no learner is left behind and that every young person is supported to realise their full potential. It once again congratulated the matric class of 2025 and wished all learners success in their future endeavours.
