Autumn hikes draw crowds to Melville Koppies trails
Nearly 50 hikers enjoyed scenic views and cool weather during the popular monthly walk in Johannesburg’s nature reserve.
Autumn offers ideal hiking conditions, not too hot, not too cold, and with lighter mornings making early starts more manageable.
Almost 50 hikers from Benoni and surrounding areas joined the monthly 8km hike at the Melville Koppies, which takes place on the last Sunday of every month.
A light breeze provided welcome relief as visitors made their way up the koppies and across the grasslands of Melville Koppies East.
Along the route, hikers enjoyed sweeping views of Johannesburg’s skyline and its well-known man-made forest.

The trail then led back into the more diverse Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, home to grasslands, indigenous forests and rocky quartzite ridges. The area boasts a variety of plant life, including proteas, white stinkwoods, acacias and river bushwillows.
The next hike is scheduled for April 26, and no booking is required.
The Koppies are open every Sunday from 08:00 to 11:30. Visitors can also enjoy storytelling sessions, with the next one taking place on April 12.
Alternatively, hikers can explore the area independently on the 5km trail or the 3km heritage trail, or book a guided tour departing at 08:00.
Entrance fees are R100 for adults, R50 for those under 18, and free for children under five. These fees contribute towards the wages of the conservation team working to maintain the reserve.
Secure parking is available at Marks Park on Judith Road, and security is provided on the Koppies.
