City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the vandalism of traffic lights results in funds being diverted from essential services, endangering lives, and affects efficient traffic flow.
“The city is set on recovering costs through legal action where traffic lights are damaged because of reckless driving,” said Dlamini.
“Ekurhuleni has 1 335 intersections, with 1 127 traffic lights that are maintained by the city, whilst others are maintained by the provincial government.”
“Motorists are urged to drive cautiously, avoid damaging infrastructure, and immediately report suspicious activities to protect our roads,” said Dlamini.
