Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) expresses its serious concern regarding the non-payment of prize money to athletes who participated in the 2025 African Bank Soweto Marathon.

The CGA office has received several complaints from athletes indicating that prize money due to race winners has not yet been paid, despite the SAIDS anti-doping results already being released.

“This situation is deeply concerning as it directly affects the welfare of athletes who competed in good faith and rely on prize money earnings as an important source of income,” said the CGA.

“WE also wish to clarify that we have rules in terms of payments of prize money that all race organisers are familiar with. In terms of Rule 9 of the CGA Rules and Regulations, race organisers are required to ensure that prize money is paid to all prize winners within 10 working days after the race; or within 10 working days after the completion of any outstanding race-related processes, such as anti-doping procedures, provided that each athlete has submitted their banking information.

“The delay in the payment of prize money therefore appears to be in contravention of the applicable CGA rules and regulations.

“CGA has formally written to the race organisers to request an urgent explanation and to seek immediate resolution of the matter. While prize money payments remain the direct responsibility of the race organiser and/or event entity, CGA is actively engaging through its governance and regulatory mandate to ensure that the matter is addressed and that athletes receive the prize money that is rightfully due to them.
