Gauteng Canoe Union crowns its paddlers

VLC paddler receives most improved trophy.

The Gauteng Canoe Union School League ended their season of monthly races at Emmarentia Dam, where the overall prize-giving for the year was hosted, recently.

Students from a wide variety of primary and high schools participate in the school league, coaching and training at nearby dams/lakes through canoe clubs.

Victoria Lake Canoe Club (VLC) had its share of achievers, as has been the case over the years, where a strong development and junior programme has been supported.

Jaemi Wellish, from VLC and St Catherine’s School, who started learning to canoe only this year, was recognised as the most improved paddler over the age of 12.

Wellish was also the second highest points achiever in the highly competitive u-14 age group, earning 168 points to place her school 10th on the log.

Points are awarded on a sliding scale for each race completed, from winner to last finisher, and the accumulated points at the end of the year dictate the individual winners, as well as the top schools represented out of some 60-plus, as well as the top club points achievers.

The points contributed to VLC saw it being placed sixth on the log, of 13 clubs represented in the league.

Colin Mann Primary placed seventh on the log through points accumulated by their students at races, while Germiston High achieved the fifth high school position.
