Cyclists to descend on metro for top cycling race
Ekurhuleni hosts the 30th anniversary of the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight.
The 2018 edition of the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight will be an extremely special cycling event.
It is the 30th anniversary of this popular and enduring cycle race which is known as one of the top five cycling events in the country and the second largest in Gauteng.
The metro is proudly hosting the event and all the metro’s infrastructure will show visitors what a great place Ekurhuleni is to live in and play sport in.
Residents are being encouraged to show the same support and hospitality to our visitors.
The event takes place on February 18 and around 6 000 cyclists are expected to take part in one of the two events – the 116km Super Classic which is a seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2019 or the 62km Vita-thion Challenge for the younger or novice cyclists.
Both events start and finish at the Boksburg City Stadium in Jubilee Road, Boksburg and there will be traffic delays in the area around the stadium and adjacent roads such as Barry Marais Road, North Boundary Road, the R23 between Heidelberg and Boksburg, the Carnival City area, the R103, the Alrode, the Leondale, Vosloorus, Dawn Park, Parklands and Helderwyk area.
Carnival City Mall traffic to and from Boksburg will also be disrupted.
Residents are asked to use extreme caution and allow for the fact that the top cyclists in South Africa will be in action and their speed should not be under-estimated.
Please allow for extra time when entering or leaving the area and remember that cyclists cannot stop as fast as a car can.

Residents should be encouraged by the fact that all the helpers on the day are volunteers and all proceeds will go directly towards finding treatments for retinal blinding conditions.
The event has raised almost R10-million over the past 29 years and this entire amount has, and will continue to be, donated to the UCT research project dedicated to finding treatments for genetic retinal blinding conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP), macular degeneration (MD) and dozens of other rare and devastating forms of retinal vision loss.
Online entries are now closed but late entries will be taken at the stadium on Saturday until 2pm.
Over R80 000 worth of cash prizes will be awarded to the top racing cycling categories but fun riders also stand a chance to win big – over R120 000 lucky draw prizes will be drawn on the day.
All cyclists who enter the donation draw (minimum of R40) stand a chance to win special lucky draw holiday prizes valued at over R100 000.
These funds will be matched by the Dis-Chem Foundation so we strongly urge participants to donate generously.
