Local runners pick up the pace at Puma School of Speed
Junior track and field stars shine at the second edition of the Puma School of Speed.
The action-packed Puma School of Speed, second edition, saw close to 1 300 junior track and field stars follow in the footsteps of the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt.
The event was held at the Ruimsig Athletics Stadium in Roodepoort recently.
Headed by Bolt, the Puma School of Speed is a national series of five track and field meets, launched in 2016, with the goal of identifying exceptional young South African athletes who believe that their future is #ForeverFaster.

Athletes, between the ages of 14 and 19, competed in various sporting codes such as long and high jump, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m and hurdles.
Local athletes from Diamond Athletics Club also made an appearance at the event and returned home with hardware.
Angelique van Niekerk took part in the girls’ u-19 long jump and landed in third place. Daniel Tolbadi grabbed silver in the boys’ u-19 long jump, Ndumiso Simelane ran in the 100m boys’ u-15 and finished in third place while Nikiwe Mongwe also finished third in the girls’ u-19 200m finals.
“We are thrilled that once again Team Diamond got medals at Puma,” said John Diamond, a coach at Diamond Athletics Club.
