Runners race through the streets of Germiston in Fred Morrison Half-Marathon

The annual Fred Morrison Half-Marathon saw runners from near and far pounding the pavements.

As winter turns to spring runners from near and far descended on Germiston, last Sunday, to tackle the annual Fred Morrison Half-Marathon.

This race, which is hosted by Germiston Callies Harriers, honours Fred Morrison, who was a well-known successful runner and a compatriot of Wally Hayward and Jackie Mekler.

Morrison was also the chairperson of Callies for many years.

This year’s race, once again, saw a number of eager runners starting and ending their race at Germiston Stadium.

The event had two distances, namely a 21km and 10km race, which both started at 7am, to the sound of a horn.

Lucky Mohale, from Boxer Athletics Club, was the first man over the finish line in the 21km category finishing the race in one hour, nine minutes and 56 seconds.

He was closely followed by Thabi Motaung from Scaw Athletics Club and Bright Mikalangwe from Benoni Northerns Athletics Club.

Caroline Poonan was the first woman to complete the 21km race, finishing in one hour, 26 minutes and 14 seconds.

Vicky Hansen from Massmart Athletics Club and Poppie Mlambo from Hollywood Bets Athletics Club, rounded off the podium finishes.

In the 10km race Thuso Phaswana from Bedfordview Athletics Club charged over the finish line in 34 minutes and 12 seconds.

While Godfrey Mithapo from Nedbank Athletics Club and Nduduzo Sithole from Hollywood Bets Athletics Club followed close behind.

Kirsten Lloyd from Greenstone Athletics Club won the women’s event finishing in 41 minutes and 19 seconds, followed by Jessica Maitland-Stuart from Run Zone Athletics Club and Lee Anne MacKay from Jeppe Athletics Club.

In keeping with tradition, Callies also hosted a 5km fun run, which started at 7.30am, and aimed to raise funds for a worthy charity.

This year Callies announced that all proceeds from the fun run would be donated to the Germiston SPCA.

A total of R3 220 was raised for the SPCA.

The club was pleased with the turnout and event as a whole.

“Everything went well on the day,” said Les Black, on behalf of the club.

“As usual there are always some things that crop up at the last moment, such as excavations on the route, but we know that we have to make a plan.

“I doubt that the runners were even aware of such things.”
