Cricket club gears up for Heritage Day event
Vosloorus Basadi Cricket Club (VBCC) held a training session at the Vosloorus Stadium on September 18 to prepare for the Heritage Day cricket event that will take place at the stadium on September 24.
According to Isaac Phele, Vosloorus Cricket Club development coach, the event will be held to revive the spirit of cricket in the township and prepare schoolchildren for school tournaments.
“At the same time we want elderly people to teach their grandchildren the sport. We also want children to bond with their grandparents,” said Phele.
Sponsored by Meat Express, VBCC has been in existence for the past four years and has players aged 45 to 75.
Phele said ever since Vosloorus Cricket Club founded VBCC, they have been struggling to attract more players.
“We wish more elderly people could come and join the team. Not only will it benefit their grandchildren, but it will also provide them with exercise.
“Another challenge we have is that of equipment, clothing and funds to help us to attend matches,” Phele said.
The Heritage Day cricket event will see VBCC locking horns with Vosloorus Cricket Club junior teams, from eight to 12 years old, u-13 girls as well the senior girls’ cricket teams.
Sesana Mathebula (75), the oldest member of VBCC, says she has learnt a lot since joining the team.
“I have learnt batting, bowling and coaching skills. As a coach, it is easy for me to pass my knowledge on to my grandchild, who is also a cricket player. I encourage other children to take up the sport since they have age on their side. If I had started at their age I would have gone far by now,” said Mathebula.
