Burning Stars successfully defend title at Primrose Sports Academy Tournament
The rain did not dampen the spirits of young football players.
Primrose was booming with sport when the Primrose Sports Academy held their annual sports tournament recently at Laerskool Die President’s sports grounds in Primrose.
The Wits Health Consortium (WHC) teamed up with Primrose Sports Academy and invited local football clubs to participate in the Primrose Sports Academy Tournament.
The teams braved the cold and rainy weather and clashed like titans, which kept all spectators fixed on the game.
The football clubs that participated were the Primrose Academy Jairus Leaders FC, Bakgatla FC, Young Boys FC, Killer Young Tigers FC, Borondos Young Boys FC, Makause Boys FC and defending champions Burning Stars FC.

“The academy is aimed at developing and positively impacting the lives of the youth from previously disadvantaged areas through sport and wellness,” said Doctor Motsoeneng.
Motsoeneng started Primrose Sports Academy in 2010.
“Since I started the academy I have been going around Primrose looking for sponsorship, but I did not have any luck,” said Motsoeneng.
“I started working for Wits Health Consortium in 2014 and in 2018 they started helping me by sponsoring the Primrose Sports Academy Tournament.
“The tournament is for children from the Makause informal settlement as I want to keep them in one place so that they can stay away from crime.”
WHC sponsored the kits and uniforms for the Primrose Sports Academy football teams.
This was also the first year that WHC sponsored netball kits.
“What stood out for us is that Primrose Sports Academy does not only focus on sport to reduce the chance of participation in criminal activities, but they also help the children learn self respect and teach them to respect others,” said Xoli Masoka, communications manager for WHC.
“These children are also learning life skills so that when they grow up they will become responsible citizens.”
Masoka also added that for this tournament, WHC not only focused on healthy living, keeping active and eating clean, but also good, friendly competition.
After a full day of heated games, which mostly ended in penalty shoot-outs, it was time for the much-anticipated final.
The final was between the u-17 teams from Burning Stars and Primrose Sports Academy.
The match ended in a 4-4 draw before proceeding to a penalty shoot-out, where Burning Stars clinched a 6-5 win.
