The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club have begun the second leg of their Easterns Cricket League campaign.

This weekend the u-10 team played host to Tsakane Cricket Club and the seniors hosted Benoni Northerns Cricket Club in the Sunday Directors League and United Cricket Club in the Sunday Presidents League.

The matches were played at the club’s home grounds, the Elsburg Sports Complex, on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

In the club’s Sunday Directors League match Elsburg lost the toss and were sent in to field first.

Benoni were able to knock-up a target of 249 runs, all out, in their 50 allotted overs, despite Elsburg seeming to have the upper hand in the first few overs of the match.

“We had taken seven wickets for just 70 runs in 17 overs,” explained club chairperson Martiens Grobler.

“However, we were unable to keep up the momentum.”

The day’s top bowlers were Darren van Tonder with four wickets in 10 overs for 39 runs and Theuns Herbst with three wickets in seven overs for 45 runs.

Elsburg then took their turn at the crease and were bowled out with only 162 runs.

The match’s top batsman was Quinton Rudolf with 29 runs.

In the club’s Sunday Presidents League match the visiting United was sent in to bat first and were able to knock-up 222 runs, all out, in their 40 allotted overs.

The day’s top bowlers were Nano Joyce with three wickets in seven overs for 32 runs and Burnie van Wyk with two wickets in seven overs for 10 runs.

Elsburg then came in to bat and were bowled out for 124 runs.

“The senior sides have not started the second half of the season on a good note,” said Grobler.

In the u-10 team’s match against Tsakane Cricket Club, the team batted first and were able to set a target of 86 runs, all out, in their 25 overs.

Tsakane then took their turn at the crease and were able to beat the target on the last ball of the match.

They won the match with 87 runs, with four wickets in hand.

“Every week we see an improvement in this team,” Grobler said.

“The batting, bowling and fielding is changing and improving every week.

“It’s just days before we will start winning all the games in this league.”
