Retaining its compact urban SUV appeal, making it one of Suzuki SA’s best-selling vehicles, the Ignis now features updates to the exterior and interior in an effort to reignite the customer’s admiration for the popular model.

“The Ignis is one of our best-selling vehicles. I believe it is because it exists in the sweet spot where our compact car and compact off-road SUV experiences meet. It is a nimble and easy-driving city vehicle but offers the space, driving experience and ground clearance of an SUV, which is perfect for our road conditions,” André Venter, divisional manager for sales and marketing, Suzuki Auto South Africa.

Three years after the local introduction of the Ignis model, Suzuki Auto South Africa has updated the Ignis to align with the design language found on other models such as the S-Presso, Vitara and Jimny. Flanking the S-emblem is four chromed square slots which give the new grille a more purposeful look and is further enhanced by chrome accents surrounding the grille on the GLX model.

The aforementioned GLX model retains its wrap-around daytime running lights with projector-style LED headlamps. Also featured on GLX models are roof rails and flared wheel arches in addition to the newly designed lower bumper featured on the updated Ignis variants. The lower bumper also accommodates a trapezoidal silver lower faux scuff plate for an upswept SUV-look and on GLX derivatives incorporates the fog lights.

On the opposite end of the vehicle, the scuff plate design is mirrored on the lower rear bumper to replace the previous black bumper insert. Further enhancing the rear bumper is two integrated upright reflectors. The Ignis range keeps its colour-coded side mirrors and the GLX specification level still features the integrated turn signals and the ability to electrically fold back when parking in tight spaces.

On the interior, customers can expect 260-litres of boot space and enough room for five occupants. For increased luggage space, owners can utilize the 60:40 split rear seats. For entertainment and creature comforts, the Ignis features an audio system with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, steering controls, electric windows and central locking and a multi-information display across the range. GLX owners, however, gains access to a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built-in. The large touch screen also doubles as a reverse camera monitor which is supplemented by rear parking sensors.

Occupants are kept safe by safety features such as dual airbags, ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and ISOFIX child anchor points which feature on all models. Security is taken care of by a standard alarm and immobiliser combination. In addition to the standard security features creature comforts, the GLX variant also comes with keyless entry and push-button start, climate control, chrome or silver highlights on the parking brake, door handles and shift knob.

“The new Ignis continues our practice of not making our safety and security features optional, dependent on specification level. This means that you benefit from all of our passive and active safety and security features, even if you opt for the entry-level GL specification level,” André Venter, divisional manager for sales and marketing, Suzuki Auto South Africa.

Under the bonnet, customers can expect the familiar K12M 1.2-litre petrol engine featuring variable valve timing and multi-point fuel injection on all Ignis models. The motor delivers 61 kW and 113 N.m to the front wheels via either the five-speed manual gearbox found across the range or the optional automated manual transmission feature with the GLX model.

Service and Warranty

The updated Ignis comes with a two-year/30 000 km service plan and a promotional five-year/200 000 km mechanical warranty, which includes roadside assistance.
