Late surge steers Vodacom Bulls to victory in Pretoria

Bulls beat Lions in Rainbow Cup.

The PRO14 Rainbow Cup SA got off to a flying start on May 1 with a drama-filled match in Cape Town when the Cell C Sharks edged the DHL Stormers 33-30, while the Vodacom Bulls defeated neighbours Emirates Lions 24-9, thanks to a late surge in their evening encounter at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

The four local teams will play each other in a double-round competition before the start of the international season.

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi lined up against his former franchise teammates at the Cape Town Stadium, where the KwaZulu-Natalians managed to pull off a three-point win thanks to a rousing second-half comeback.

The form was on the side of the Cell C Sharks who had won four of the last six encounters between the coastal rivals and they made it five from seven with a five-try victory.

In the evening fixture, the Vodacom Bulls managed to turn their 10-6 halftime advantage into a deserved 24-9 victory over the Emirates Lions, thanks to a strong finish.

The Pretoria side also had three tries disallowed.
