Mixed crime trends in Sedibeng as Heidelberg ranks among top hijacking areas

While trio crimes decline across Sedibeng, a rise in kidnappings and Heidelberg’s ranking among Gauteng’s top truck hijacking hotspots are raising fresh concerns over safety in the region.

Crime patterns across the Sedibeng region are mixed, with some categories declining while others continue to raise concern among residents and authorities.

This follows the release of recent crime statistics, which reveal a 21.5% decrease in trio crimes, a category that includes car hijackings, house robberies and business robberies.

Despite this decline, certain areas remain heavily affected, with Orange Farm and Evaton contributing significantly to Sedibeng’s estimated 7% to 9% share of Gauteng’s total serious crime.

The statistics also highlight a troubling rise in violent crime, particularly kidnappings.

Police data shows that cases have increased in areas such as Sebokeng and Heidelberg, signalling a growing concern for community safety.

Of particular concern is Heidelberg’s ranking among the top three hotspots in Gauteng for truck hijackings. This has raised alarm among local businesses and motorists who rely on major transport routes passing through the area.

Meanwhile, some improvement has been noted in Vanderbijlpark and Vereeniging, where business robbery cases have slightly declined. Despite this, property-related crimes such as burglary and theft remain prevalent across the region.

Townships including Bophelong, Boipatong and Sharpeville continue to experience high levels of assault and community-related violence, reflecting ongoing social challenges in these areas.

Authorities have warned that although the decrease in trio crimes is encouraging, the rise in violent offences paints a concerning picture.

They have emphasised the need for increased policing, stronger law enforcement strategies and active community involvement to effectively address crime in the region.
