Truck hijacking attempt on R103 foiled as vehicle and cargo recovered in coordinated response

A swift multi-agency operation was launched along the R103 after an attempted truck hijacking on June 16. While the truck, trailer, and cargo were successfully recovered, three occupants remain unaccounted for as SAPS continues with investigations.

An attempted truck hijacking on the R103 on June 16 triggered a large-scale multi-agency response involving law enforcement, community safety structures, and private security teams.

The Rensburg Forum received an emergency activation via the Joint Tactical Team communication network from a Heidelberg SAPS warrant officer reporting an incident involving a truck and trailer on the R103.

Upon arrival, members of AfriForum Heidelberg were first on scene and assisted in securing the area while additional role players were dispatched.

Ground teams immediately began searching surrounding fields for possible suspects and any missing occupants, while drone support was deployed to assist with aerial surveillance.

Preliminary information from the scene indicated that suspects had attempted to hijack a truck and trailer.

It is alleged that the original truck tractor unit was disconnected from the trailer and replaced with another vehicle brought by the suspects, in an attempt to remove the loaded trailer from the area.

Three occupants, including the driver, were initially reported missing, while only one truck assistant was located at the scene.

This prompted an extensive coordinated search operation involving multiple ground response teams and aerial support.

During the operation, several individuals matching the suspects’ general description were spotted in nearby fields, prompting a coordinated pursuit.

However, these individuals were later confirmed to be unrelated to the incident. The truck, trailer, and cargo were successfully recovered and returned to the owner.

At the time responding teams stood down, the three missing occupants had not yet been located. The matter has since been handed over to investigators from SAPS Detectives and the Provincial Truck Hijacking Unit for further investigation.

Role players involved in the operation included AfriForum Heidelberg, SAPS, the SAPS Flying Squad, Ratanda Anti-Crime Unit, Rensburg Forum, and ATS Tactical. Authorities have noted the coordinated response between all teams, which contributed to the rapid recovery of the vehicle and cargo.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
